Michael Naimo’s fascination with the art and science of photography has led him on a four-decade journey from hobby to passion to career. Beginning with his North Shore childhood in Massachusetts, Naimo was affected by the magic of photography.

Despite early professional success as a high-tech computer engineer, that magic pull of making pictures never abandoned him. Naimo soon succumbed to his artistic bent and in the mid-80s began formal training. At both the New England School of Photography and also the esteemed Museum School of Fine Arts in Boston, he honed his technical skills.
“I wanted to help people celebrate life moments in different, exciting, creative ways,” he says, “and photography was the most meaningful.”

Naimo quickly became a working photographer, operating businesses on the North Shore and in downtown Boston through the late 1980s. He shot commercial pictures for advertising agencies and artistic takes for bands and musicians. His work attracted attention from starmakers in the arts field, and he soon found himself summoned to the heady fashion world of Los Angeles (CA). There Naimo was even commissioned by a chain of coffeehouses to photograph a series of imaginative, fantastical pictures for public display. His talent for combining commercial appeal with artistic style developed dramatically during this time.

Some years later, home beckoned, and Naimo returned to establish a gallery in coastal Beverly (MA). “The arts scene in town was just gathering momentum then, and my gallery hosted more than 30 shows in what was effectively a three-year party!” he recalls with some pride. The hip enterprise functioned as a studio, a gallery, a coffeehouse, an exhibition space and experimental lab for emerging artists of all stripes. N Gallery attracted a young crowd which reveled in the poetry, music, and spoken word events sponsored by Naimo. His own photography, and mentored art of all styles, enlivened the gallery walls. “I seem to have a gift for nurturing talent in other artists, and their success and enthusiasm brings new dimension to my own work,” he says.

Naimo’s creative expression is matched by his service philosophy. A steady repeat clientele at is present Beverly site speaks volumes about his knack for making people comfortable before the camera. His current roster of assignments keep him traveling throughout New England, photographing weddings, children, family events, and business portraits. He’s been sought out by such notables as author John Updike, musicians Barrance Whitfield, and Stan Strickland. His bold, inventive framing and sensitive compositions get straight to the heart of each telling situation.

“My work has a definite personal touch, and a sense of timeless quality,” he says. “I’m driven,” he confesses. “I strive to meet my own standards, and that effort always results in exceeding the client’s expectation.”
